NEMISA 4IR

Data Science Innovation Hackathon 2021
A data-driven approach to policy decisions
RFP: Mentorship and Innovation PartnerEvent programme
—  2021
Goals for this event

An event that aims to address a shifting digital landscape

There is an increasing loss of jobs in the midst of high unemployment in South Africa as a result of the 4IR and more recently COVID. It is therefore necessary to recommend policy that is based on evidence (data). If we do not take such an evidence-based approach to innovation, we will be repeating the same mistakes over again. The environment today is rapidly changing and the same needs to apply to policy.

Masterclasses

While data science is a modern catch-all for everything from pivot tables in Excel to machine learning, data-driven storytelling is a less well-known discipline. In this session, I will take you through a few examples of data stories and give you an opportunity to try your hand at one yourself.

This 2-hour crash course is designed to introduce the basics of Python programming and show examples of how these basics can be applied in Data Science. The session will be hands-on. By the end of this crash course, participants will: understand basic control structures in Python, be able to write simple programs, and learn (from a step-by-step example) how to extract knowledge from data and create insightful visualisations. No programming experience is required for this course.

Azure Cognitive Services brings AI within reach of every developer through a family of APIs that don’t require machine-learning expertise. In this session, Lebogang will give you an overview of the many APIs available under the Microsoft Cognitive Services umbrella, and a demonstration of how Cognitive Services enables you to add advanced AI functionality, such as vision, speech, search, and text services with only a few lines of code for modern application development.
